From February 2017 we are pleased to announce that there will be a new clinic taking place alongside the existing general legal advice (GLA) provision.
The Small Claims Clinic (SCC) will be piloted from Wednesday 8th February until Wednesday 15th March, and, if successful, will run on a full time basis from September 2017.
The SCC is suited to those clients who would like advice about making a claim in the county court small claims track, for example, if you are owed money that is not being re-paid, or you have been the victim of sub-standard building work. Alternatively, perhaps you have received county court papers that you wish to defend, and need advice on how to proceed. Advice may be on a one off basis, or, over a period of time. The SCC will be able to advise matters such as; drafting letters before action, the claim form, defence, drafting a witness statement, and the format of a small claims hearing in a District Judges chambers.
The SCC will be supervised by Chris Mills, Teaching Fellow in the school of law, and a part time District Judge in the county court. We are very pleased that he has agreed to be involved with the clinic, as his current experience of small claims cases will be invaluable to assist the student advisers with their advise to clients.
The SCC will run alongside the GLA at our established location of The John Pounds Centre, Queens Street, Portsea. Clients will be seen by appointment only from 10am – 12pm on a Wednesday beginning the 8th February 2017.
